On the third day of Music Waste, a music waste pass gave to me… A big party on south Main st! Starting at 2pm with Neptoon Records, which was too early, so I’ll consider it starting at 3pm, with PINNER from Victoria. These guys are so loud! Then it was Line Traps, also from Victoria, who ended their set with a well executed Oblivians cover! Finally, MOSFETT took the award for heaviest band to play a record store. Lots of slow head banging to this one. They played some new material from their upcoming Roswell EP.
Friday was the second day of the Music Waste Festival, your chance to see new and exciting dive bars for only $15! Counting by the stamps, so numerous as to look like bruises, I saw five shows last night. Let’s summarize them all!
/Zoo played a very awkward set between the BC Liquor Store and Lotto Centere in the Kingsgate Mall, “Sponsored by addictions anonymous,” said singer Ashlee Luk on FaceBook. The acoustics of the room gave echos to echos, and a lot of the mall patrons didn’t know what to make of them. A Langara shop teacher told me they sucked. but the lady in monochrome neon green seemed to really like them.
The opening night of Music Waste was a crazy success!
This is their 20th year, and it was a party right from the top. Some partiers were shotgunning beers outside the SBC Restaurant in anticipation of B-LINES.
Ryan Dyck led his band on stage to play a brief set of their new material from Opening Band, declaring themselves “the best band to have ever played the Smiling Buddha.” A pretty tall order when compared to Black Flag and the Descendant’s influential Hardcore ‘81 performance, but we’ll trust his 2 missing teeth that this came to be true. Props to the skateboarder on the vert pipe that night!
